Rarely 100%. People can still take calls, meet and work offline for a while.
Online orders, invoicing, production scheduling. Count only sales you would lose or delay.
Extra effort as a share of the outage: re-entering data, clearing backlogs, answering "is it back yet?".
More assumptions
- Employer's National Insurance (15% above £5,000 a year)
- Employer pension contributions (at least 3%)
- Benefits, equipment, software licences and desk space
SLA penalties, overtime, emergency support call-out.
What an incident costs Your estimate
How it's worked out. Staff cost per hour is salary × (1 + overhead) ÷ working hours, multiplied by the number of staff and the share of work that stops. Lost revenue per hour is annual revenue ÷ working hours × share dependent on systems. Catch-up time adds a percentage on top of both, and each incident adds the fixed cost.
This is an estimate for planning, not an accounting figure. It leaves out harder-to-price effects such as lost customers, reputational damage and regulatory fines, so the real cost is usually higher. Your figures stay in your browser; nothing is sent to WatchMyTech.
