How do I find an email's headers?
- Outlook (classic desktop): open the email, then File › Properties. The headers are in the "Internet headers" box at the bottom.
- New Outlook and Outlook on the web: open the email, click the three dots (…) › View › View message source.
- Gmail: open the email, click the three dots (⋮) next to Reply › Show original, then Copy to clipboard.
- Apple Mail: select the email, then View › Message › Raw Source.
- Yahoo Mail: open the email, click the three dots (…) › View raw message.
- Thunderbird: open the email and press Ctrl+U (Cmd+U on a Mac).
- On a phone: most mail apps can't show headers. Open the same mailbox in a web browser on a computer instead.
About Header Detective
Every email carries hidden headers: a record of every server it passed through and whether it passed the checks that prove who sent it. Paste them in to see where an email really came from, whether it's genuine, and where it was held up.
- Checks SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and whether the sender's address lines up with them
- Spots replies redirected to another address, fake display names and spam scores from Microsoft 365
- Shows the route hop by hop, with the delay at each step
- Everything happens in your browser: the headers are never uploaded or stored
